Thanks to modern technology, the removal of your wisdom teeth is a fairly common and comfortable procedure. Wisdom teeth often cause problems as they are trying to come through the gums. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it means the tooth is coming out at an angle rather than straight through the gum line. This can cause pain, the tooth can come in unevenly, or the tooth may only emerge partially. At Sheppard Village Dental we have years of experience in removing wisdom teeth and know how to ensure the process is as quick, easy and comfortable as possible. Book your consultation today and let us maintain the health and function of your smile.
Candidates for Dentures
Did you know that around one quarter or adults over the age of 65 are missing all of their teeth? Dentures are a common and respectable solution to missing teeth. They are so dependable and natural-looking that you’ve probably spoken to someone with dentures and didn’t even know it. Do you think you might be a good candidate for dentures? To be a good candidate for this restorative treatment you should:
Wish to replace several or all of your teeth. There are alternative solutions available if you wish to replace just one or two teeth.
Have a healthy jawbone. After you lose a tooth, your jawbone will slowly become thin and less able to support a denture-- especially an implant-supported denture.
Be ready to take good care of your dentures at home and with routine cleanings and checkups!
The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process
When a wisdom tooth only emerges partially a flap of the skin may form over the tooth. This can make the tooth hard to clean, and pieces of food may become caught under the skin. This makes it easy for an infection, called pericoronitis (inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the crown portion of a tooth), to develop. It will usually go away on its own but it can cause swelling and pain in the area. However, it usually re-occurs over time, necessitating the removal of the wisdom teeth.
Identifying the Issue
Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth that can potentially cause problems such as infections, need to be removed. At Sheppard Village Dental we will explore the situation to discover how many wisdom teeth need to be removed. Extractions can range from a single tooth removal to the removal of all four wisdom teeth at once. Each situation is unique and we will work with you to decide the best solution for your overall health.
The Removal Process
At Sheppard Village Dental we are here to ensure your comfort every step of the way. Based on the preference of the dentist and the patient a local anaesthetic can be used to numb the areas where the tooth will be extracted. Some patients prefer to sleep through the procedure, so we do offer sedation.
Minimal Invasive Technique
Extractions are a common procedure and should not cause undue stress. At Sheppard Village Dental, we use a technique to gently remove your tooth. This allows for faster recovery time.

Pericoronitis is inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the crown portion of a tooth. Pericoronitis usually affects wisdom teeth where gum tissue overlies the chewing surface of the tooth.
Yes. Your comfort is a top priority and that’s why we offer a variety of different sedation options. Once your appointment has been booked, we will discuss the best sedation option for you and your health.
Full recovery takes around 2 weeks but it’s important to free up your schedule for at least three to four days after the procedure before getting back to your daily routine. This will allow you enough time for rest and recovery.
